Project EPIC

Project EPIC is a Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) grant to prepare future teachers of the deaf and speech-language pathologists through an interdisciplinary collaboration. (Available for our on-campus students only.)

Project Nexus

Project Nexus is an interdisciplinary collaborative project between TWU’s graduate programs in Adapted Physical Activity and Speech-Language Pathology. Project Nexus aims to prepare APE and SLP scholars with the skills necessary for effective teaching and/or service provision to students with disabilities with high intensity needs. (Available for our on-campus students only.)

Why study speech-language pathology at TWU?

On-Campus Option

  • Classes held in the evenings on our Denton and Dallas campuses
  • 9-10 hours of academic coursework each semester
  • Diverse practicum experiences 2-5 days a week each semester
  • Cohorts start in the summer or fall every year

Distance Education Option – Schools-focused Track

  • Classes held in regional Education Service Centers across Texas and through live interactive webinars on your home computer>
  • Complete clinical experiences with sponsoring school districts during the school year and at medical facilities during summers
  • Cohorts admitted every two years with the program beginning in the summer of odd years

Distance Education Option – Healthcare-focused Track

  • Classes held through live interactive webinars on your home computer
    • Students must attend classes on the Denton campus three days each summer semester
  • Complete clinical experiences with sponsoring healthcare entities, school districts, and at other healthcare settings
  • Cohorts admitted every two years with the program beginning in the summer of even years

The distance education option allows you to work as a licensed speech-language pathology assistant while in the program.

Experiential learning in TWU’s Clinics

Speech, Language & Hearing Clinic

On-campus students train with experienced TWU faculty in our on-site Speech, Language & Hearing Clinic which provides services to those in the community with speech, language, cognitive-communication, feeding or hearing difficulties. You will provide clinical services to clients with supervision from faculty members who are ASHA-certified and Texas-licensed speech-language pathologists and audiologists.

The Stroke Center – Dallas

The Stroke Center – Dallas, located on TWU’s Dallas campus, allows graduate students in speech-language pathology to train with professors and other health professionals providing treatments to clients who have experienced a stroke. Gain hands-on experience assessing the communication needs of individual clients, outlining a plan of care and providing outpatient services.

Post-baccalaureate SLP Certificate in Deaf and Hard of Hearing

If you are interested in working with children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH), you can earn this certificate while getting your master’s degree.

  • Certificate offered at TWU to students enrolled in the master’s SLP program (and practicing SLPs)
  • Classes delivered 100 percent online
  • Clinical Practicum (75 hours) provides hands-on experience under the supervision of licensed and certified SLPs who are experienced in working with children who are DHH

Post-baccalaureate Certificate in Multicultural and Diversity Studies for the SLP

If you are interested in gaining additional knowledge and experience working with diverse populations, you can earn this certificate while getting your master’s degree.

Supportive student organization

The Student Organization of Communication Sciences (SOCS) works to bring you opportunities in leadership, community service, addressing professional issues and participating in social activities with peers and faculty to learn more about communication development and disorders.

SOCS is a member of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Scholarship opportunities

Career Opportunities

The MS in Speech-Language Pathology prepares graduates to apply for a Certificate of Clinical Competence (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) and for a Speech Language Pathology intern’s license (Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations). If you are a resident of another state, contact our department to determine whether our program fulfills requirements to apply for licensure in your home state.

These credentials open up a variety of speech-language pathologist career opportunities, such as working in a medical facility, school or a private healthcare service agency.

While salaries can vary, the median salary for a certified SLP is $76,610 with a much faster than average growth rate, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The Speech-Language Pathology program at Rutgers University has three major program goals:

Program Goal 1: Excellence in academic education and clinical preparation. The academic and clinical curriculum is based on state-of-the-art scientific information and clinical procedures.

Objectives:

  1. Infuse the curriculum with content regarding multiculturally diverse populations, particularly dialectal and bilingual/multilingual influences on speech, language, and communication skills.
  2. Ensure the curriculum contains information regarding interprofessional education and that students have opportunities for interprofessional practice in the clinical setting.
  3. Incorporate contemporary principles of clinical practice in the assessment and management of speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders within a medical setting.
  4. Prepare students for American Speech-Language-Hearing Association certification, professional New Jersey state licensure, and the New Jersey Department of Education speech-language specialist certification.

Program Goal 2: Excellence in Faculty and Student Scholarship. Academic and clinical faculty are dedicated to professional scholarship and increasing student participation in scholarship.

Objectives:

  1. Produce faculty scholarship to promote the national ranking of the program.
  2. Actively engage students in clinically relevant research and problem-solving.
  3. Foster student scholarship through implementation of EBP in clinical and professional venues.

Program Goal 3: Expand community visibility and clinical opportunities. The SLP Program at Rutgers University is committed to addressing the clinical needs in speech, language, communication, and swallowing in the Newark, NJ community and beyond.

Objectives:

  1. Offer affordable, accessible, and quality clinical services to the Newark community and beyond.
  2. Provide continuing education opportunities to practicing clinicians.
  3. Engage community members in program development and educational strategies.

Speech and Language Therapy is a type of therapy that helps people with communication disorders. By studying a Masters in Speech and Language Therapy, you’ll gain a qualification that can help you support people to improve their speaking and listening skills.

Your clinical practicum experiences will give you broad exposure to patients across the lifespan. We place students in many settings, from early intervention to major medical centers and from schools to private practices. Our clinical faculty will work closely with you throughout the placement process as you develop your clinical skills. In addition to these outstanding clinical placements, Sargent College operates its own clinical education centers right on campus. Our graduate students, supervised by faculty practitioners, conduct individual and group treatment sessions for members of the Boston community at the Academic Speech, Language & Hearing Center and the Aphasia Resource Center. By the time you complete the program, you’ll be confident in your knowledge and skills in any practice situation.
